Some tips for your Business and Home this festive season

As you no doubt have figured out, load shedding is back with a vengeance, which poses problems for most businesses wanting to close and go away during the holiday period or even just for the weekend.  While going off-grid is not always affordable, here are some low costs ways you can protect your systems.

The Office – Some tips on how to protect the equipment at the office

• Run a full set of backups and make sure they’re good.
• Things to unplug:
  • Shutdown your computers, yes, the server/s too.
  • Unplug the power as well as the network cable. (this stops power spikes damaging your important equipment when the power comes back on.)
  • Hopefully, you have a decent UPS, if you don’t need it running then switch off and unplug.
• Things NOT to unplug. (make sure this is connected to a UPS for these)
  • Your Access Control.
  • Your Alarm system (These have a backup battery in them, check when last yours had a service, as they only last a couple of years)
  • Your Video surveillance system. And it that uses your Internet connection for remote access viewing, you need to leave all your internet related infrastructure ON, which includes your internet router and likely your Wi-Fi unit/s, check with your Security provider and Alarm company.

  • Your home computer/s
  • Your router / Wi-Fi (but not if you have a security system that relies on it)
• Things NOT to unplug.
  • Your Alarm system (These have a backup battery in them, check when last yours had a service, as they only last a couple of years)
  • Your Video surveillance system. And it that uses your Internet connection, so you can see your house from your phone, you need to leave all your internet related infrastructure ON, which includes your internet router and likely your Wi-Fi unit/s, check with your Security provider and Alarm company.
